The Bombay Art Society's Annual Art Exhibition – A Brief History

The Golden Era

The Bombay Art Society, established in 1888 by British with an objective of encouraging Art particularly amongst amateurs, and of educating the native public to an appreciation of its merits. In west, when post Impressionists like Cezanne and Renoir were laying the foundations for Modernists like Braque and Picasso, Bombay Art Society was playing the seminal role of amalgamating the great but forgotten traditions of lndian Art with the influences of Western Art. From those times onwards Bombay Art Society has paved the way for Modem lndian Art.

Contribution of The Bombay Art Society
The lnitial careers of the ace ranker painters like Haldankar, Hussain to Hebbar, Bendre and Badrinarayan to Bahulkar and till Anil Naik and Vasudeo Kamath and the master sculptors frorn S. G. Mahatre, V. P. Karmarkar, B. V. Talim to Raghav Kaneria to Chandrajit Yadav, Uttam Pacharne has been influenced by the Awards and recognition in the Bombay Art Society's Exhibitions. After scrutinizing and considering aesthetic worth, exhibiting the works of professional talents and students of caliber on the same platform, Bombay Art Society has always created a sense for developments in the Art Trends for Art Connoisseurs and public at large. The Prestigious Medals, worthy Scholarships, and respectable Awards have been a talent hunt and a great support to the upcoming and commendable artists.
From initial years The Bombay Art Society has been backed by people of prestige, His Excellency Governor of the State being the Chief Patron, it has always had guests in the lnaugural Functicns people like leading citizens, merchants and military officers and Government Servants of high credentials. To get recognition in such exhibitions was a chance of a life, for Artists.

The New Face of The Bombay Art Society
Now considering the yeomen services in the Art World, The Bombay Art Society was granted a land at Bandra Reclamation. With the vision and dedicated efforts of many artists and especially of Late Smt. Prafulla Dahanukar, a huge symbol of architectural grandiose has taken shape with three Galleries, an Auditorium, a Library, an Art Shoppe etc. In a short while it will be throbbing with activities like Lectures, Talk Shows with Slide and Film Shows, Seminars, Workshops, Regular Study from Life Classes and Study Tours along with Auctions and Exhibitions of Masters from India and abroad. We will need support and active participation from all Artist friends and Art Students to make our efforts grand success.
